Beyond the Buttons: Why We Chose to Slow Down With You
Beyond the Buttons: Why We Chose to Slow Down With You
The other night, I was sitting on the edge of my daughter's bed. She had chosen a story on the app, a tale about a little bear looking for his lost lovie in the clouds. The narration began—soft, steady, and calm. And then, I had that modern parent reflex: I looked at my phone, wondering if we should add an option to speed up the pace, or a feature to generate ten variations in one click, just to "optimize" the moment.
But looking at her face, I realized I was wrong. She wasn't looking for efficiency. She was looking for presence.
What we observed in your living rooms (and ours)
By talking with you and experiencing our own sometimes chaotic evenings, we noticed something striking. We live in a world where everything moves fast. Video platforms offer endless streams of content, and algorithms decide what we should like before we've even finished thinking.
We saw parents feeling almost guilty about using a screen, even for an audio story, because they were afraid it would become just another machine for passively "consuming" images or sound. We saw decision fatigue: after a long day at work, choosing a story can become one more task on the to-do list, instead of a moment to breathe.
The question of the human touch
The question we asked ourselves at Alba Time was simple yet daunting: how do we use technology without letting it steal the moment?
Should we create a machine that produces thousands of generic, interchangeable stories just because we can? Or should we build a tool that leaves room for the gaps, the silence, and above all, your personal touch?
The risk when developing an app today is falling in love with the tech and forgetting why you started. We almost built a powerful recommendation algorithm—the kind that locks you into what you already know. But we realized that’s not what a family needs at 8:30 PM.
What we built (and why it’s sometimes imperfect)
We chose real personalization over statistical matching.
When you create a story on Alba Time, it’s not a robot making all the decisions. You are the one breathing life into the ingredients. We spent months fine-tuning the audio narration so it wouldn't sound like that cold, metallic synthetic voice you hear on a GPS. We looked for intonations that mimic a parent’s breath, natural pauses, and that warmth that makes a child feel safe.
We also refused "infinite scroll" features. We don’t want your child to chain ten stories together like someone watching short clips on social media. We want a story to be an event in itself. A moment that begins, lives, and ends to make way for sleep or a little chat.
We chose to maintain a form of simplicity, even if it makes the app look less "spectacular" than others. Because the star isn't the app. It’s the bond between you and your child.
How it changes your daily routine (just a little)
In practical terms, this means Alba Time isn't here to replace you, but to support you when your imagination is running low after a day of meetings or errands.
The impact is in the small details: when your son hears his name and his teddy bear's name in a space adventure, he doesn't think, "What a great algorithm." He thinks, "This story is for me." And you can take five minutes to sit back, close your eyes with him, or simply hold his hand without having to invent every plot twist if you no longer have the energy.
We didn't try to create the perfect app. We tried to create a companion that accepts that family life is made of fatigue, laughter, and the need for calm. It might be a little less high-tech, but it’s much more human. And we hope it feels a bit more like you, too.
